ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
KIM CHALOVICH
As founder and director of Mississauga’s TAP DANCE CENTRE, Kim Chalovich does more than a savvy shuffle. With over 35 years of teaching experience and 25 years performing professionally, Kim is focused on inspiring her community to create connection and expression using rhythm and tap. Whether it’s her local productions, student performances, school outreach programs, or the large scale event she founded in 2005, the Eastern Canadian Tap Conference (E.C.T.C.), Kim’s commitment to tap is evident to all. Leaving behind her mechanical engineering career has never been a regret - it has only fueled Kim to help others find joy in dance and to live life to the fullest. Becoming the founder and Artistic Director of the Mississauga-based professional tap dance company, “What’s On? Tap!” (over 20 years ago) has created even more opportunity to delight audiences while providing a spark to create more platforms for local tap artists to “give voice” to their feet. Her troupe has performed at E.CT.C.’s TAP!, Dance Weekend, fFIDA (the fringe), Junction Arts Festival and Juba in 2011 at the Chicago Human Rhythm Project. As an in-demand teacher and trainer, Kim enjoys meeting tap enthusiasts from all over the world. She has presented workshops and masterclasses locally and abroad (including at the prestigious Chicago Human Rhythm Project’s Winter Jamboree & Rhythm World). And has been honoured to study alongside Henry LeTang, Jason Samuels Smith, Diane Walker, Lane Alexander, Bril Barrett and Heather Cornell to name a few. Other endeavors also include developing and promoting the TDC Tap Syllabus, taking the National Tap Team to the World Dance Championships in Germany, and continuing to create more platforms for the exposure and education of Tap Dance. Kim’s mission with the Tap Dance Centre is to foster the artistry of tap dance through a positive, dynamic environment.
